MESSAGE FROM YOUR CAPTAIN

As the new PGC Captain I welcome all members, guests and visitors to the new golfing season. I hope you all enjoy your golf and social activities throughout the year. The season starts, weather permitting with the Captain V Vice Captain Competition on the 24th March I hope to meet as many of you there as possible. By that time the Dormy House which suffered storm damage will be repaired and back in action and we will be back on the full course with the course winter program completed. Note attention to ladies tees at 12th and 14th, new path to 2nd tee, bunker changes at 13th and 14th  . There will also be a number of new mature trees planted on the 5th,11th and12th holes. The winter program was not as comprehensive this year due the disruption caused by staff changes, but Paul Sharp, our new Head Greenkeeper is now in post and I’m confident you will continue to see the ongoing development of the course under his management.

The Management committee members this year are as follows:- Vice Captain & Secretary Susan Chappel-Smith, Treasurer Brian Tilley, Ladies Captain Barbara Lappin, Match& Handicap Alan Brown, Greens Convenor George Burnett, Pennant League Brian Taylor, Seniors Convenor Ian Gellatly, Junior Convenor Frank Moore, Health & Safety Ian McLean, Committee members Gerry McCormack and Ian Thomson.

The FDC survey returns will be collated and the results displayed on the Club notice boards and web site. As agreed at the AGM the highest priority item will be progressed if the annual financial projections are met.

A new competition as been inaugurated this year. This is after a request from the low handicap male members that there is not a Scratch knockout out competition in the club apart from the Seniors (which seems to be won every year by a certain Maurice Grieve). To satisfy this request a Scratch Competition for male members with a handicap of 9 or less will be held, sheet is on the notice board. It is recognised that this may increase tee time bookings, but be assured that the situation will be closely monitored and if necessary adjustments made to the format in following years.

Upon payment of your fees you will be sent your loyalty card with £25 on it ready to be spent. For some of you, my self included, the first £25 will be long gone. The card will also be used for competition signing in therefore speeding up that and the score recording procedure for medal competitions.

I hope that you are looking forward to the new season as much as myself – enjoy your golf.

Bill Morrison PGC Captain.

COURSE NEWS

The course opens officially on 24th March with the Captain versus Vice Captain competition, followed by the Opening shot-gun start competition for all on 25th March. Weather permitting, the course will open for general play on Thursday 22nd March.

Paul and his team have been very busy over the winter months, amongst other things they have levelled and redone the ladies tee boxes on the 12th and 14th. It is unlikely that they will be fit for play at the beginning of the season, but they will be brought into use as soon as possible. Mats and teeing areas to the front of the tees will be in place for the time being. Also the bunker has been removed from the back right hand side of the 14th green. Work has also been done to improve the slippy slope along the 14th fairway. New trees have been planted, fences repaired, paths tidied and new ones made…Can you tell where they are?? In general all maintenance work has been done to ensure the course is in excellent condition for the start of the season. Our thanks to all greens staff for their hard work over the winter months.

We hope you enjoy your golf.

We would also wish to remind all golfers that practice is not allowed on the course.

New Seasons Greetings from Dean,

Having survived another winter we can now look forward to the new season with enthusiasm and excitement – goodbye frost, mats & temporary greens - hello sunshine, green grass and summer greens- bring it on!!

Considering new equipment for the coming season?

I quietly check with our members and other golfers on an ongoing basis, what their priorities are when buying golf clubs. Nobody wants to pay more than they have to. But the number 1 priority with the vast majority of golfers remains making sure that their golf clubs fit them properly.

In fact, for most golfers the thought of playing with a set of Irons that are built to fit them exactly, that feel perfect in their hands at address, through the swing, at impact and on follow through is a major ambition. So what stops them from fulfilling the ambition?

It can’t be time, because for a properly trained PGA Professional and a genuine club fitter this is a 20 – 40 minute exercise. It can’t be cost as almost all club fittings are actually free. And, if you are a member, I don’t think it can be access to a trained person to fit you properly.

I suspect that most golfers do not feel that they ‘deserve’ to be fitted. They feel that somehow their current swing precludes them from the right to play with a set of golf clubs that have been individually built to their specification. Is that the reason really?

Think about that one. Ask yourself, if you’re not playing with clubs that are setup for you, why you didn’t get your set fitted. I’d actually be interested in your thoughts, so mail me on: pro@petercultergolfclub.co.uk and let me know. Remember we are here to help you enjoy & improve your golf.

In the meantime, if you are thinking about buying golf clubs, please, whatever your concerns, make sure you get fitted and enjoy the feeling of your golf club working WITH you.

Of course there is much more modern technology to assist now but the basics remain the same:
Physical dimensions, strength, athletic ability, posture and swing shape
.

1. Interview Process Give us a call and arrange an appointment with Dean or Craig, Shop Tel: 734994 or email: mailto:pro@petercultergolfclub.co.uk

2. Static Measurements
Your height and other measurements are used to calculate a starting point.

3. Dynamic Swing Test
A fitter evaluates how your stance and swing affect the position of the clubhead at impact.

4. Ball Flight Observation
Your ball flight tendencies and preferences are important factors in determining the final specifications.

5. Monitor Performance
Since your swing may change over time, periodic evaluations can help keep you playing to your full potential.

A Sales Assistant doesn’t know if he will ever see you again. If I, your qualified PGA Professional, sell you a set of clubs I’ll have to face you every time that you come down to the club to play golf or have a drink to remind me about the set you bought.
