Greetings from Dean,

Thanks to all who have emailed the shop over the last few weeks in seeking advice on custom fit and new product information – keep it coming, we are here to help you enjoy your golf.

Congratulations to Maurice Grieve who at 73 yrs of age scored his age while playing in the Seniors Club Championship P/Q on Saturday 5th May, Maurice played the back nine in level par 35 (that’s scratch folks!). The top 8 scratch & top 16 nett scores have now been drawn and now progress to the knockout stages of this event – if you are one of these check the Seniors notice board and check out your opponent and play by dates.

This week I talk a little about shirt technology and what goes into the making of a modern golfing shirt and try to keep things simple when talking about investing in new equipment.

ITS HERE at LAST!!   Now in stock we have the Masters Square Driver, why not pop in and ask for a test drive. I took it onto the 1st tee myself when it arrived in store and I can tell you that all the hype about these square boys is true and wow do they work! Believe me this baby does what it says on the tin! The carry and the accuracy is well worth the £119 price tag – ask in store for more info on the new product.

FACED WITH SO MUCH CHOICE, FOCUS ON YOU

A common question remains: which golfers should play with forged and which should play with other compositions?

Much as the magazines and adverts would try to simplify that answer, it isn’t a sensible place to start any selection process. That’s the centre of any argument that I am going to make. The process is about you, your golf game, your circumstances:

1. Start with your budget and what you are prepared to spend.

2. How do you strike your Irons currently (are you consistent, do you have a higher or lower trajectory, do you push or pull, draw or fade).

3. What is the strength of your Iron game and where do you lose shots.

4. What is important to you in looks, feel, brand and what priority do you place on results over those softer requirements.

5. Now we can look at a much narrower list of clubs that fit your selection criteria rather than the interests of an advert or a promotion that somebody has screaming
from the middle of the newspaper, golf mag or internet page.

Approached this way you are going to be ‘investing’ in a product that has a great chance of delivering pay-off. The next step is to make sure that the club is built (at no extra charge) to fit you. That is going give you a club head whose design is built to improve your game and a club that is going to work WITH your setup and swing.

NANOTECHNOLOGY DOES WHAT FOR ME?

While the glamorous Driver, or the fundamental Irons, or the exotic Putter grab the headlines with innovation and the promises of shots off the scorecard, the best innovations get fewheadlines.

However there is a fantastic advancement in rainwear, wind protection and outer-wear that I would like to mention. Scientific advances, especially something called nanotechnology, now provide us with the lightest, thinnest, no-noise jackets which the rain bounces off, shirts that somehow keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter and grips that seem to get tackier in the wet.

Don’t ask me how but the situation on the left is improved by the technology on the right.
Good to know, in the face of Global Warming, that the clothing and
footwear manufacturers have got us covered.

How this works, I have no idea, but it has revolutionised golf in the more traditional areas of the northern hemisphere. As we approach summer take the time to think about your golf gear.

Check out your rain-jacket. It doesn’t need to rustle on the back-swing, scream on the down-swing and announce your arrival 40 meters before you get to the green. And again it shouldn’t restrict your backswing.

WHAT DO YOU WANT IN A SHIRT?

When you make the decision to buy a golf shirt what drives you? Must your shirt be fashionable in cut, design and colour or is a shirt just a grudge purchase that you’d rather someone else would make for you? When thinking golf shirt do you conjure up thoughts of, classy, elegant, easy, hardwearing or comfortable? Is your choice affected by price, colour or design?

It is fair to say that a golf shirt today is well beyond what a golf shirt was just 10 years ago. It is also fair to say that the golf shirt has climbed the out of bounds wall and hopped it, to be found in fashionable bars, modern work-places, family dining rooms and even down the local pub.

That’s good news, because an investment in a golf shirt today is an investment in a shirt that will be used so much more. Even more good news is that the golf shirt manufacturers, like Greg Norman, are now at the forefront with cutting edge designs and the most modern colours: Sunray, nectar, lipstick, roman blue and limelight.

When you pick up a shirt in the shop you can’t see the technology but in the best shirts it is packed into the fabric and design.

The Greg Norman range aims to provide shirts whose colours last, whose cut doesn’t curl; shirts that don’t wrinkle and shirts that keep you cool and dry.
Today, a shirt is more than a cover to conform with the local dress code.

Next time you are in the shop, look at the Greg Norman range of shirts and let me know what you think.

Will they provide you with the athletic comfort you want out on the course this blistering summer (going on April’s weather that has to be the prediction)?

Will they provide you with the versatility you require?

I want to know: do these shirts work for you?

Re-gripping service.

Ditch those sliders!

Get A Grip!!

The start of the new golfing season is the time to have a look at the grips on your clubs. Have the grips become slippery and hard over the winter months? And more importantly are they the correct thickness to allow you to grip the club properly. Your hands are your only contact with the club so the grip must match the size of your hand to allow you to keep the ball on target.

Before re-gripping we will check that your grips match your hand size.

 SUMMER IS COMING

Now is a really good time to check out the basics with your equipment.

And my first question to you is:

“Are you playing in bare feet?”

Check out the spikes on your golf shoes. I’ve checked a few around the club and some of you might as well be playing in bare feet
