Greetings from Dean,

Congratulations go to Brian Cameron this week who with a score of 44 points won the Gents Spring Meeting on the Saturday last weekend and then on the Sunday we saw the Anniversary Texas Scramble being played, Graeme Baxter, Eliot Milroy & Ian Baxter winning that one with a score of 61 - congrats all round.

Tired of playing poorly in competitions? Just give me a shout; you’ll be amazed at how we can improve your performances.

This week Craig attended a 2 day PGA Trainee induction course down at PGA National HQ at the Belfry home of the Ryder Cup in recent years. Craig’s next step now towards his 3 year apprentiship in the profession is to attend a PAT (Playing Ability Test) at Crieff GC on Thursday 24th May, lets all wish Craig the best at Crieff.

The course is now looking much better and the definition between fairway, semi-rough and rough becoming much more evident.

For your information, the quietest day on the course is always a Monday afternoon. If you avoid the society time, it is millionaire’s golf. Last Monday apart from the PEGGS cars I think we had about 20 cars in the car park during the day. So if you are looking for a quiet time to play, Monday afternoons are definitely the days to go for.

This week I look at the grooves on wedges and their legality in the near future. Come see me for more information or if you want to check the grooves on your wedges. I also feature ping wedges, which are available to you in your pro shop, so pop in and have a look.

Enjoy the read

Regards,
Dean

WEDGE DESIGNS: IS YOUR GROOVE RIGHT?

You will probably be aware that you need to check that your Driver is going to be legal as the COR restrictions come into the amateur game this year. There have been several years of notice on this, so we’ve been kept well informed by the authorities.

Their next notice from the USGA has been about the ‘grooves on your wedge”. Square or ‘U’ grooves are going to be phased out. These are the grooves that have enabled the top Pros to land and stop a golf ball on the green from the thickest of rough. It’s this feature that has bred a number of ‘bombers and gougers’ on the tour.

Actually the square groove will be banned on the PGA Tour by Jan 1st, 2009 with the amateur golfer affected after January 2010. So lots of notice again.

But this is a rule change that isn’t going to really hurt the average golfer. The square grooves have no additional effect (over the traditional ‘V’ shaped grooves) on the Surlyn golf balls that the average golfer uses.

Then, statistically the average golfer only hits the green 13% of the time from 100 – 140 yards out. That means that any additional spin that they can generate from the advanced square grooves is wasted on sand in the bunker, greenside turf or worse still the long grass in the rough.

No, this is a rule change that is going to have far more impact on the Touring Pros and their approach to the game right back at the Tee Box.

GOOD WEDGE DESIGN OPENS UP VERSATILITY

The range of Wedges that are available on the market has increased dramatically. Even within one supplier there are now 5 and more different models with numerous loft and bounce configurations.

Ping have been innovators in this market, seeking to provide solutions that will deliver benefit to both the regular club golfer and the better player.

The iWedge takes the innovations introduced in the Ping Eye2 Sand Wedge and extends them to provide versatility and performance.

The ‘concave sole’ positions the pivot point from the leading edge to help get under the ball quickly (and prevent digging) for higher, softer landing shots from the sand and turf.

The aggressively tapered heel and toe allows you to lay the Wedge open at any angle or in fact to slightly close or hood the face, increasing the versatility that you have with these Wedges.

This positions the centre of gravity (CoG) near the centre of the face and low.

This will offer you a really solid feel as well as increased forgiveness from the expanded perimeter weighting.

When you pick up a Ping Wedge in the shop, lay it open and look at how comfortable it appears at address.

If you haven’t tried a Ping Wedge, then experience the feel, consistency and probably most importantly, with a Wedge, the confidence inspiring look at address whichever way you lay the club. It is this versatility that we all want in our short game clubs.

But, before making any decision let’s make sure we get the right fit, the right bounce and the right solution for your game. Give me a call.

Have a great week and good luck to all of you playing this weekend.

Regards

Dean

Re-gripping service.

Ditch those sliders!

Get A Grip!!

The start of the new golfing season is the time to have a look at the grips on your clubs. Have the grips become slippery and hard over the winter months? And more importantly are they the correct thickness to allow you to grip the club properly. Your hands are your only contact with the club so the grip must match the size of your hand to allow you to keep the ball on target.

Before re-gripping we will check that your grips match your hand size.

 SUMMER IS COMING

Now is a really good time to check out the basics with your equipment.

And my first question to you is:

“Are you playing in bare feet?”

Check out the spikes on your golf shoes. I’ve checked a few around the club and some of you might as well be playing in bare feet
