COURSE / GOLF NEWS

Junior Course Record: On Sunday September 9th a 12 year old (yes 12 years of age!!) by the name of ANDREW CARRELL played in the gents 36 hole medal 2nd round. Andrew whose adult handicap was 7 at the start of the round covered the 18 holes in a SCRATCH 67 strokes, that’s 4 under the par of 71. Andrew finished off his round with 3 straight birdies finishing 3,4,3 to complete a gross 67 and post a junior course record. Andrew was partnered by Ian Milroy and Derek Mathieson – WELL DONE ANDREW – Andrews new handicap after this amazing round has now dropped to 5 – not bad for a 12 year old!

It has to be said that the course received nothing but positive feedback from those who played this years. The overall condition from the start of the season was first class and as we moved through the fixtures the course seemed to get better and better and for this we thank our green staff led by Paul Sharp – well done men.

Winter Playing Conditions

You will see detailed elsewhere in this issue the winter rules for the winter season. We will endeavour to have an 18 hole course throughout the season with only 2 winter greens 5th & 7th. The use of mats I’m afraid is a necessary evil, the previous rule of choice of using a mat or moving the ball into the rough caused major wear along the edges of the fairways which took well into the season to repair. Mats will therefore be mandatory through the green ie: if your ball is on the fairway or the first cut you are required to use your mat – please refer to club winter rule notices as advertised on club notice boards prior to playing the course.

We would also wish to remind all golfers that practice is not allowed on the course. Offenders will be reported to the management committee.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR CAPTAIN

It has been a very successful season as far as the management of the club is concerned. We have a full membership and a waiting list of people wishing to join next year. The financial situation is good with all departments meeting their financial targets. Bookings next year for society days and outings are already ahead of last year with the majority being repeat business, a reflection on the quality of the course and the clubhouse service.

We are now rapidly heading towards the end of the season, Winter League and all that. The weather to say the least has been changeable but it  has contributed to the excellence of the golf course, a major contribution  is of course the  work of green keeping staff which has been top drawer all year. The condition of the course has elicited glowing comments from all sections, visitors and the professionals who played in the Pro-Am.

Planning approval as at long last been given for the green keeper s equipment shed and we can now apply for a building warrant. Where the time scale was for an autumn build it now looks like spring will be more realistic but, if we have an open winter it my progress sooner.

Clubhouse extension

It was decided by the Management Committee to review the clubhouse extension plans displayed earlier in the year because they did not fully address the concerns and issues raised by the membership, these were :-

·          Improve Ladies locker rooms.

·          Enlarge kitchen and servery facility.

·          Increase dining area.

·          Provide Junior locker room.

The updated plan addresses all the issues raised with the added advantage that the transfer of junior locker space to an identified junior locker room frees up lockers in men’s locker room.

Unfortunately the changes do affect the project cost. The original cost was £80,000 plus the cost fitting out of the kitchen. The estimated cost has now risen to nearer £150,000 plus fitting out. In defence of the increased estimate, the estimated building costs in Aberdeen area have risen considerably in the last year so a like for like comparison is not entirely valid.

The updated plans are on display in the clubhouse, any comments; suggestions should be directed to Dean or me.

JUNIOR NEWS

Up till a few years ago there was always a Junior Captain of the Junior section of the club. For some unknown reason no appointment has been made in recent years, it is therefore my intention to reinstate this position. There are now over 200 junior members, nearly 20% of the membership, whose only representation is through the junior convenor. Juniors range in age from under 7 to 18 and may find it difficult to communicate matters relating to their golf and the club to an adult but may be more comfortable discussing an issue with a member of their own age group. It is also my intention to invite the Junior Captain to a number of Management Committee meetings to savour the workings of the committee and hopefully contribute a junior perspective to the proceedings. I would wish the juniors to consider this appointment and encourage them to consider who they believe is worthy of election.

LADIES NEWS

The ladies have had a very busy Summer and despite the inclement weather, not too many competitions have been cancelled.

The Oncology charity day, which is Captain v Vice Captain, was once again well supported, we had a great day with nibbles and pink fizzy at the Dormy

House, followed by sandwiches and cakes provided by Chris. The Vice-Captain’s team won by a narrow margin, wait till next year. It was a pleasure to have Betty, Dawn and Richard, along to help with prize- giving.

The CALS held there open on 9th Aug. thanks to Wendy Jense for organising this event.

Ladies Invitation day this year was sponsored by Patterson's of Aberdeen and the ladies were very grateful to Steven Patterson for the truly wonderful prizes.

The County Open on 30th Aug. was well supported on a chilly day. Thanks to Barbara Newlands for the organisation.

The ladies weekend away this year was at Piper Dam, playing Edzell on the way.The weather was very kind and a good time was had by all.

The mixed fours sadly had a very poor day weather wise, the first time for a good few years. However some good scores despite the conditions, with P.G.C. members doing very well. Thanks to Veronica and the ladies committee, plus all other helpers.

Finally as the season draws to a close, a reminder that the ladies prize- giving will be on Fri 26th Oct tickets on sale at bar soon.

Babs Lappin Lady Captain

Perfect Golf

If only the Golfers in front replaced divots, repaired pitch marks, smoothed out bunkers, kept just behind the match in front not just in front of the match behind, walked briskly between shots……

what a perfect game golf would be!

New Club Brochure

It seems hard to believe that it is almost two years since we first produced our excellent club brochure. I am writing as a matter of courtesy to inform you that we are now about to produce a new version to reflect the changes and continuing improvements to the club and course. As with the current version it will be a full colour, high quality glossy brochure, A5 in size with up to 40 pages packed full of information and photographs of our club and course. It will have everything members and visitors need to know about Peterculter Golf Club, our facilities and the surrounding area. This will also be accompanied by the excellent electronic e-brochure, which is an exact reflection of the glossy version and has far reaching capabilities.

The brochures will be distributed free of charge amongst members, companies and societies, and will be seen by many thousands of visitors from near and far. The brochure will also be widely used as a mail out to other clubs, businesses and companies to promote tournaments, competitions, golfing holidays and other forms of pre-arranged visits.

We will be giving our members and existing business partners first option to feature in our prestigious brochure with all positions being exclusive i.e. only one advertiser from any trade or profession, e.g. only one solicitor, accountant, photographer, jeweller, etc. The quality of our brochure is designed to enhance the club’s image and therefore the image of any businesses within it.

Marion & Jim Potter at Pitchmark Publishing Ltd will again be handling the production and will hope to contact you directly where possible, however as you will appreciate, we do not keep business details on file and we will be using local knowledge where available. We would therefore urge you to contact Jim or Marion for information as soon as possible as spaces will be limited.

Please call Marion or Jim directly and not the club as they can provide you with full information and can arrange a meeting to discuss your requirements.

The brochure has proved an excellent marketing tool for the club and we hope you will take the opportunity to feature in our next publication.
