Peterculter Golf Club

August E-News 2004

Please spread the word to others, who you think may have e-mail, that this is the way to be kept up to date on PGC news.  Several hard copies are available in the clubhouse.

MESSAGES FROM YOUR CLUB MANAGER:

·         Slow Play: Once again this seemingly annual problem rears its head on the course. There are signs on course which remind players as to their need to not only keep up with the group in front but also ahead of the group behind.  There is nothing more frustrating than being held up during a round of golf.  REMEMBER the etiquette of this great game allows all golfers to respect other players by simply inviting a faster playing group from behind to play through, this way you will help to not only keep play flowing but to take the pressure off your own game by looking over your shoulder every 2 holes! Also if you think that your ball may be lost SIMPLY play a provisional, and REMEMBER you are only allowed 5 MINUTES to search for a lost ball!

·         ETIQUETTE REMINDER: BUNKERS & PITCH MARKS when playing from a bunker PLEASE remember to rake up after your shot and place the rake back into the bunker. This simple rule of the game will not only help keep your course looking tidy but will also help to keep the bunkers from becoming an eye sore: LEAVE THE BUNKER AS YOU WOULD EXPECT TO FIND IT – THANK YOU.     PITCH MARKS: Yet again the problem of unrepaired pitch marks has returned. We all make pitch marks when our ball lands on the green, please take the little time needed to repair yours and one other. HELP KEEP YOUR GREENS FREE FROM PITCH MARKS

·         WHATS ON COURSE? Check your notice boards when up at the Club, the main board in the hall way as well as the notice board outside the Pro Shop all detail important information including a what’s on course list for the current month – plan ahead check your board.

  • Pro-Am on 24th July: The Club staged its first ever Pro-Am tournament in conjunction with Aberdeen Petroleum Club on the 24th July.  34 Professionals took part alongside a team of 3 amateurs per team on what turned out to be a very windy Culter course .Despite the severe winds the course was in excellent condition and received many compliments from both the Professionals and the amateur players. All players enjoyed an in house snack before and after the golf along with a welcome bite by the 10th tee where the club staff were on hand to dish out a range of nibbles and refreshments, all supplied by Rob Roy Catering - Chris Holmes. The winning Professional on the day was Robert Arnott  (Bishop Briggs Driving Range) who knocked it round in 67 (-4), which was a great score on the day, Robert finished 1 shot clear of Sam Cairns   (Crieff G.C.), with Ian Bratton (East Aberdeenshire) on 69 (-2). Both the day's golf and clubhouse activities proved to be a success - a big thank you goes to our Clubhouse Steward: Audrey Grant who controlled all in house activities as well as ensuring that the half-way house down at the 10th went smoothly well done Audrey. The day moved into evening with the Gala Dinner and auction being staged at Kippie Lodge where Jimmy Hill (not bad going for a 76 year old football pundit!!) conducted the auction in his own style with the end take resulting in excess of £20,000 being raised for a number of local charities - well done to all those high rollers!! Its amazing how much money there is after a few bottles of wine and champagne are consumed!!

·         Member and Guest Day on 31st July: This year we had 134 players taking part in the event which was an 18 hole team better ball format including a carvery either before or after the golf. The winners this year were: 1st: Alan Johnston & A. Irvine (57)  2nd: Malcolm Morrison & R. Davidson (58 BIH), 3rd: Peter Guthrie & E.Brown (58)

  • Captains Day on 1st August:  A sun drenched Peterculter lawn saw a "Chip Off" between three teams to decide this years winners of the team event, after much fun the team winners were: Jill Watson, Andrew Dingwall & Alan Brown, 2nd: Daniel Rae, Stewart Rae & John McKay,  3rd: Caroline Johnston, Alan Johnston & Ray Johns. Individual winners:  Best Lady: Laura Charlton, Best Junior: Scott Fraser ,  Best Gent: Daniel Rae,  The best individual winners all have their names engraved on a silver disk attached to the "Captains Putter"   Well Done to all.

The course is in excellent condition and looks great.  Our thanks to the greens staff for working so hard to give us a first class facility.

WELL DONE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS!

  1. "Back to Back Eagles" Bill Cattanach, had Eagles at the 6th and 7th when playing in one of the Seniors stableford competitions in June.  Since he had strokes at both holes he accumulated 10 points for just the 2 holes. Needless to say he went on to win the competition.
  2. "You can't beat a hole in won" Irvine Long had a hole in one on Pro's Day at the 10th Hole. This was the hole where there was a prize for nearest the hole, needless to say Irvine won it. That the good news, the bad news was that he had to buy everybody in the club a drink, which he generously did. Thanks Irvine.

OTHER NEWS:

Marc heads for the States:

Club Member Marc Vass who has worked for Dean in the Pro Shop since October 2003 fly's out on Saturday 14th August to start a 3 year Golf Scholarship at Dodge City College in Kansas. Marc was chosen from a group of young 12 North-East golfers who were hand picked in 2003 to attend an all expenses paid golfing trip to Houston by the Grampian Houston Golf team headed by former Kings Links owner Bruce Davidson now Director of Golf at the River Oaks Country Club, Houston. Marc will focus not only on his golf during the next 3 years at Dodge City but will also concentrate equally on the academic side of his college life. Marc will return home during the college summer break - we look forward to seeing him back at the Club then but in the meantime we wish Marc all the success State side.

CLUB DIARIES FOR 2005:

We are considering moving away from the Fixture Book to a Club Diary for next season.  We feel that with a diary we can supply more detailed information on the fixtures that is more user friendly, e.g. the actual tee times reserved for club competitions will be listed on the daily diary pages as well as the Clubs’ usual yearly fixture list.

Whether or not we do change will depend on cost.  We are currently looking at the cost implications and, with this in mind, are looking for page sponsors who would like to advertise in the club diary that is issued to in excess of 1000 people in the local community.

Anyone interested in being included in this inaugural Club Diary please contact the office for further details.

And Finally:

That’s it for this month folks. The final newsletter will be in October.  E-mail me at talisker2@btopenworld.com if you want to include something in our E-news bulletins. Susan C. Smith.
